Panelists:
Janet Allen, MSN FNP-C, RN, PHN
Alex L. Andrade Jr, PhD
Elaine C. Souza, MPH RD CSOWM
Description:
Adults who receive a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes might respond in a range of different ways to the life changes required to actively manage the disease. This presentation will provide the
perspective of three treatment providers, a medical provider, a psychologist, and a dietician, and
how they help patients to practice, process, and implement the life changes required to manage
type 2 diabetes. The primary focus will be how a multidisciplinary approach, as well as a lack of
one, impacts patients’ ability to successfully manage their diabetes. This presentation will be a
collaborative discussion between the audience and the panel members with multiple
opportunities for participation and sharing of experiences.
Objectives:
As a result of the presentation participants will have a better understanding of the following:
1) diagnostic criteria of type 2 diabetes and medical/behavioral treatment interventions;
2) treatment providers experience in how patients perceive a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes;
3) how a multidisciplinary treatment approach can benefit patients and treatment providers;
4) how treatment providers can develop collaborative treatment interactions and communications.
