SVPA is pleased to announce the following opportunity for continuing education training: "Applied Attachment Theory: A Close Encounter for Therapists" presented by Dr. Paul Aikin, Ph.D.

Details:

Attachment is fundamental to all clinical work- our interventions build upon our client’s capacity to develop a secure attachment within the therapeutic relationship.  Helping adult patients experience their unsafe and insecure attachment wounds is crucial, but not easy.  Research conducted over the past several decades has brought to light the importance of healthy adult attachment.  Dr. Sue Johnson has developed an attachment treatment model/map that integrates Bowlby’s theory of attachment with emotionally focused therapy (EFT).  Aspects of her couples model will be applied to the individual treatment situation to create a secure base from which capacities for love, safety, and secure attachment develop.

In this workshop, we will review a treatment approach that integrates emotional, relational and attachment concepts and explores aspects of Dr Johnson’s mapping model as it applies to:

  • Client-therapist relationships
  • How to integrate with a relational psychodynamic model that works from the real personal relationship
  • How to effectively help our adult patients heal their chronic anxiety, fears, insecurities and low-grade depression that results from early attachment wounding.

Therapeutic work designed to heal insecure attachment will be illustrated with clinical vignettes and video clips of attachment interventions.

Upon completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  1. Have a vision of what adult insecure attachment actually looks like in the treatment situation and recognize when it is present.
  2. Understand and apply the theoretical and research significance of emotion, attachment, and relationship to the treatment of insecure attachment wounding.
  3. Recognize and apply the theory of treatment for insecure attachment wounding to adult patients.
  4. Understand the theory and interventions involved in doing therapeutic attachment work in the real personal relationship.
  5. Be familiar with and be able to apply therapeutic interventions to the reorganization of insecure attachment into secure attachment.
  6. Understand and apply some aspects of Sue Johnson’s emotionally focused treatment map to the treatment of insecure attachment in adult patients.

This advanced workshop is being offered for 6 continuing education units and is open to all SVPA members as well as to other mental health professionals such as LCSW's, MFT's, Nurses, and MD's.
