Working with immigrants and refugees can offer psychologists and other clinicians a richly rewarding clinical experience, in terms of helping an underserved population, and promoting social change. Psychologists, as evaluators, can serve a unique role in providing psychological evaluations for refugees seeking a safe haven (asylum), undocumented immigrants seeking to keep their families intact (hardship), and other types of immigration cases that offer a legitimate route to legal residency (U-Visa, T-Visa and VAWA). This training will offer an overview of the types of evaluations needed in immigration cases, guidelines on how to prepare these evaluations, cross-cultural considerations, and tips on working with an interpreter. The training is suitable for masters-level clinicians as well, since psychological testing is not emphasized (due to limitations on cross-cultural validity of instruments), and flexible standards in immigration court.
